Cette collaboration entre la SETRAG et l’ANPN vise essentiellement la préservation des pachydermes et autres animaux le long de la voie ferrée, par le suivi de leurs mouvements migratoires ; les heurts par les trains perturbant cette cohabitation pacifique.
Dans la recherche d’une solution pérenne, Setrag a opté pour une approche concertée avec l’Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux, en conduisant une étude sur plusieurs mois, en vue d’élucider les mouvements migratoires des pachydermes.
Le mode opératoire consiste aux prélèvements d’échantillons ADN, l’utilisation de colliers-balises, la pose de caméras pièges dans les zones les plus accidentogènes, aux fins de réduire le nombre de heurts de trains avec ces espèces menacées d’extinction qui se déplacent aux abords de la voie ferrée.
Pendant 10 jours, la Direction Développement Durable de la Setrag, encadrée par le Dr David Lehmann, Biologiste de la Faune Sauvage à la Direction Technique de l’ANPN, accompagné des agents de ladite agence et des membres du Ministère des Eaux et Forêts, ont sillonné plus de 125 kilomètres à pieds pour identifier les zones à risques pour les éléphants.
C’est ainsi que la traversée de M’bel, Oyan, Mouyabi, Ivindo, Ndjolé et Otoumbi a permis de cerner la problématique, proposer des solutions idoines, et de circonscrire les zones à risques qui seront traitées en priorité lors de la mise en œuvre du Plan d’Action qui découlera de cette étude.
Les objectifs de cette étude sont conformes à la législation nationale, aux standards internationaux de la Banque Mondiale et à ceux du Groupe ERAMET. « Dans tous les projets que nous initions nous devons mettre en place des hiérarchies dans les mesures d’atténuation des impacts négatifs : éviter, minimiser, restaurer, c’est précisément ce résultat que nous visons ici en voulant diminuer voire supprimer le nombre de collisions d’animaux avec les trains. Cette mission s’imposait doublement, en effet nous avons appris peu de temps avant la mission conjointe que l’Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature (UICN) avait évalué et catégorisé l’éléphant de forêt, en danger critique d’extinction », a précisé Isabelle Teboul, Directrice Développement Durable de la Setrag.
Le Groupe ERAMET via SETYRAG intraitable en matière de protection de l’environnement, entend pleinement jouer son rôle d’acteur économique, tout en préservant la biodiversité d’ailleurs, « le respect et la protection de l’environnement, des communautés hôtes et la performance économique ne sont pas incompatibles, bien au contraire, l’un ne va pas sans l’autre. En tant qu’acteur économique et responsable, Setrag ne peut dissocier le développement économique de l’entreprise, au progrès social et à la qualité de l’environnement. C’est ainsi que nous mettons un point d’honneur à nous engager de plus en plus dans des actions à vocation sociétales et environnementales. D’ailleurs, nos actions pour la protection de la Biodiversité et le Conflit Homme- Faune/Eléphants vont se poursuivre, très prochainement, avec la finalisation de notre partenariat avec la DGFAP pour la lutte contre le braconnage et le trafic de produits fauniques », a conclu la Directrice Développement Durable de la Setrag.
